Three Books To Kick-Start Your Journey To Healthy Eating

Summer is around the corner and if, like me, you’re trying to get your body in shape for the holidays, it’s important to make sure you’re both keeping active and eating well. This time of year, so many people are signing up to the gym but don’t shape up their diet and, therefore, don’t get the results they want. If you’re looking for some motivation to eat healthy but delicious meals, there are a variety of cook books available to help inspire. Today, I share three just-released books which I have found helpful to my journey.

‘So Delish’ by Simone Anderson

Simone Anderson has become a social media sensation thanks to her fresh and raw approach to healthy food. What’s even more motivating is her personal story. Simone’s weight peaked at 169 kilos and when she finally faced up to how overweight she was, she knew something had to change. Simone shared her progress on Facebook, to keep herself accountable, and her fan base grew rapidly as she underwent gastric-sleeve surgery and lost a massive 88 kg. Her story went viral when she shared photos of the excess skin that remained after her weight loss. And when she was offered surgery to remove the skin, she documented the whole experience and got worldwide media attention. In this honest and moving book Simone tells her story. Her key messages of body positivity and learning to love yourself make this an inspiring read for anyone.

This book shares some really great and simple recipes for fresh and low-calorie meals and snacks. Split into categories like Breakfast, Lunch, Platters, Dinners and Snacks and Treats, this book really has something for everyone. I personally enjoyed the Smoothie ranges she shares alongside recipes for salads, fritatas, a yummy chicken tray bake with couscous, the parmesan-crusted fish with tomato ragu, slow-cooked lamb shanks, broccoli balls and an easy and healthy peanut butter and cacao nib protein bliss balls.

‘Snack Power’ by Tiffany Hall

I find that when I am trying to eat healthy, the meals are usually easy. But, it’s the snacking where I often crumble. It’s so easy to just open up a packet of crisps, a chocolate or snack on some cookies and the idea of healthy snacking, for me, usually goes to some fresh fruit dipped in that bland no sugar and no salt peanut butter. So, ‘Snack Power’ has been a really great read for me. This book is filled with 225 recipes to help inspire your snacking while ensuring that the calories are kept at a minimum.

Tiffany splits the recipes into the best pre- and post-workout snacks, snacks to eat according to your different moods, the best snacks for special occasions, snacks to satisfy the whole family and easy-to-follow tips and tricks for batch-cooking, prepping in advance and snacking on-the-go.

With simple and easy to make recipes for snacks like an apple and cinnamon seeded loaf, chicken noodle and sweetcorn soup, kale and sea salt crisps, eggplant fritters, quinoa and zucchini fritters, date and quinoa balls, spelt blueberry muffins, pistachio, goji berry and sweet potato brownies and so much more. This book really is an all-encompassing problem solver for snackers around the world.

‘The Feel-Good Family Food Plan’ by Dr Joanna McMillan

Eating healthy is complicated as it is, so image the mammoth task of getting a family on a healthy food path. In her new book, Dr Joanna McMillan, gives you the confidence to know that you are feeding your family as best you can, the tools to help you deal with the many difficult food situations that can arise, the tricks to making mealtimes easier and within budget while minimising food waste, and the inspiration to make food a pleasurable and delicious part of your family life.

Providing practical, simple solutions, easy-to-follow advice and expert tips, The Feel-Good Family Food Plan is with you every step of the way as you get homemade, delicious meals on the table, even on the most hectic work/school days.

I love the fact that this book splits recipes into categories like Breakfast, Lunchbox Ideas, Snack Food and Plant-Rich Dinners because, let’s face it, having that inspiration and knowing you are feeding your kids healthy yet nutritious food is something parents constantly aim for.

What’s special about this book is that Dr. Joanna McMillan has a meal plan set out for you already for both the summer and winter months. She also shares insights into dealing with picky eaters, encouraging a healthy relationship with food for teens, key points for feeding babies and an array of delicious, fresh recipes that makes this book a must-own for every parent.

All three books are now available online and in all good book stores. ‘Snack Power’ does have an alternate cover for the South African territory.
