Kopano Molokoane Unpacks New Mzansi Magic Mini Series ‘Lobola Lama 2000’

Kgosi, played by Khensani Chauke, is ready to marry the love of his life, Lindelwa played by Nolwazi Tsebesha. Her family has spent days preparing for the lobola negotiations, but things get flipped when things fall apart- the lobola delegation of omalume cannot make it on time.

This forces Kgosi to come up with creative contingencies which could be a solution or the worst idea ever, roping in his young and inexperienced friends to save his future nuptial plans as lobola negotiators or destroy them completely!

Executive Producer Kopano Molokoane says the story taps into something many young South Africans will instantly recognise when it comes to ilobolo and more than anything, the funny spin presented by the show.

Here’s more of what Kopano had to say regarding his work on Lobola Lama 2000.

Lobola negotiations are known to be serious business – what made you want to turn such negotiations into full-blown comedy chaos?

I normally start my creative process by saying, “Imagine…” I don’t like doing normal things – I just get crazy with ideas. I thought, imagine if Gen Z went out to negotiate lobola, considering they’re often perceived as a generation that does things on a whim and says or does anything without thinking twice. Then I would laugh to myself. If it makes me laugh when I’m alone, I know it’s the one.

How does the series balance respect for tradition while still having fun with modern-day Gen Z behaviour?

The bride’s family are traditionally oriented and strict while Gen Z is a group of typical young and naughty guys, so young viewers will be learning the lobola process through the eyes of these young guys.

Youth Month is all about celebrating young people. Why would you say this is the perfect time to tell a story like Lobola Lama 2000?

The film takes us on a journey of where we are as a nation currently and how our youth behaves. It’s a story that will make the whole family laugh together at all the chaos brought on by being young and inexperienced during this youth month.

What makes Gen Z  approach to love, marriage and tradition so entertaining to explore on screen?

This generation is a different breed, so this show is not just about their vibes but seeing a Gen Z in love is so cute because most of their stories are about fun mjolo and not about getting married.

What was the biggest challenge in making a comedy that feels real, relatable and proudly Mzansi at the same time?

The biggest challenge was getting actors that will be able to display on screen chemistry and connection to make the story more authentic.

What can viewers expect when Mzansi Magic premieres Lobola Lama 2000 on 01 June?

Loads of fun and lobola lessons!

Lobola Lama 200 is part of Mzansi Magic’s local mini-series celebration and airs on Monday 01 June at 19:00 on DStv Channel 161.
