The funniest, most X-Rated Marvel film yet.
Starring: Ryan Reynolds and Ed Skrein
Plot: This is the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
Remarks: After watching the trailer for Deadpool, I was a bit nervous to watch the film. Marvel is known for kick-ass dramas with a tinge of sass here and there, but will they be able to make a full on comedic drama? Deadpool was also a character that, at the time, didn’t have much substance. However, after watching the hilarious opening credits, I knew that this wouldn’t the film I was expecting. The film is hilarious and although this is a superhero film, it works. Ryan Reynolds gives off an almost ‘Joker’ vibe with his confidence, sarcasm, wit and a face hidden by a mask. His finally redeems himself after that ghastly Green Lantern performance and really brought the character to life. There is actually a lot of depth to the Deadpool character and this film explores it all which I really enjoyed. The story is split into the past and present and while there is a lot of information. Every Marvel film has its villain and Ed Skrein played a perfect one. He portrayed Ajax in such a freaky and peculiar way and it makes his character really difficult to figure out. Deadpool, however, has some friends helping him along the way – X:Men Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (who Deadpool jokes were the only X:Men the studio could afford). They each played an important part in defeating Ajax but they were a bit awkwardly placed for me. The film, although comedic, has a lot of action as well – violent action! The producers and writers managed to blend the right amount of comedy and action into this film and it has become one of my favourite Marvel films to date. This is a must-watch! PS – this is not one to take the kids to.
