This classic story gets a make-over.
Starring: Quvenzhané Wallis and Jamie Foxx
Plot: Academy Award nominee Quvenzhané Wallis stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan. But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.
Remarks: Annie hasn’t been getting the best reviews – and I understand why. The film doesn’t have a sense of magic around it like the original has, the story has changed quite a bit and Cameron Diaz, as much as I love her, is annoying as fuck in this remake. So I get why many critics aren’t fans of this movie. That being said, one know exactly what one would expect from this film. It’s a feel-good film. Sure, the changes might annoy you, but you will still get that sense of happiness and you will still sing along to the film. Quvenzhané Wallis has an absolutely amazing voice and the scenes in which she sings with Jamie Foxx steal the film for me. I also adored Rose Byrne in the film. She brought such a sense of humanity to the film as she played Will’s VP Grace. Oh, and the soundtrack is banging! So yes, there are a lot of things wrong with the film, but there are just as many things right with it!
