Kylie Sonique Love Becomes First Trans Person To Win RuPaul’s Drag Race

In the ultimate race for the finish, drag queen Kylie Sonique Love has made herstory by clinching the crown of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars’ sixth season. She becomes the first transgender person to win the title in the American, and original, version of the series.

Kylie beat out fellow finalists Rajah O’Hara, Ginger Minj and Eureka in what was one of the tightest finales yet. Kylie returned to the werk room after coming in ninth place during the second season of the popular series – 11 years ago!

Since then, she has had a full evolution becoming one of the most popular drag performers in the world today. Kylie’s story is both interesting and important as she shines light on the trans community.

From being sent home on the very first Snatch Game to absolutely crushing it as Dolly Parton this season, to her excellent performance during the ‘Rumerican Horror Story’ skit. However, it was her looks every single episode (and an epic lip sync to Lady Gaga’s ‘Stupid Love’) which helped her win the crown.

“It’s a new story for a trans person. There’s been a lot of tragedy for trans people,” Kylie tells EW moments after winning. She adds that wearing an American ensemble during the finale made the whole experience even more empowering. “Being a trans person and wrapping myself in an American flag in a country where we’re all supposed to have equal rights and be free, at the end of the day, that’s not how it is,” the 38-year-old says. “Taking that and saying ‘F— you, I’m here, too, and I’m going to shine and be just as great in it as you think that you are,’ it’s taking back this country and making it stand for something that we can be proud of.”

Kylie adds the irony of winning a lip-sync to Lady Gaga after going home for a botched impersonation of the pop star 11 years ago is not lost on her. “It felt good knowing that, yes, I might’ve done a bad job doing Lady Gaga, but this time I can redo it and perform it instead of having to use my own words. That was what I wanted to prove.”
