If you watched last night’s episode of My Kitchen Rules South Africa, you’d recall the episode being one of the most intense local reality show moments of the year so far. In an epic culinary battle, finalists Rox and Spoen Green and newly engaged couple Kim and Pashi were put to the ultimate test and eventually, the country sisters from Winterton were crowned as the season two champions.
In the final challenge, the teams were tasked with creating an appetiser, a soup, a pasta dish, a main meal and a dessert. The teams were required to prepare 20 plates of each course for the grand finale which means a total of 100 plates per team were created in the show’s grand finale.
Judging and scoring each dish were the show’s resident judges David Higgs and J’Something, as well as a panel of outside experts: celebrity chef Reza Mahammad, who is often referred to as “the spice prince” of The Food Network; editor of Fresh Living Justine Drake, who has her own cooking show, Just Cooking; chef, food stylist Zola Nene, one of the Bashers on Season 2 of M-Net’s Wedding Bashers, and a judge on The Great South African Bake-off; and South African filmmaker, chef and television personality Justin Bonello, who is best known for his cooking and travel show, Cooked.
With a variety of incredible dishes created by both teams (like a crab curry, a pork belly bau bun, ricotta raviolli with mushrooms and pancetta crisps and beef cheeks), Rox and Spoen were ultimately crowned the winners of the reality show with an impressive score of 47 out of 60 points, beating Kim and Pashi by eight points.
Naturally, Rox and Spoen were delighted at winning popular show’s second season and the R1 Million cash prize that comes with it. When asked how they plan on spending the money, Rox and Spoen told us that they have an idea of how they’re going to spend their money. “We really felt touched by Chris and Ash’s foundation and what they are doing there. It is just really awesome. We would like to give a portion of our money to them. With the rest of the money we have some small plans and some big plans,” Spoen tells us. Rox adds that “We live in a local Zulu community, we have grown up in a rural environment. Our Zulu staff and the people who live around us and our farm are the most incredible people. Sindisiwe, who works with us, is one of the most incredible women in the world. She stays late with us cooking just because she loves it. She is our best friend at home. We thought if we won we would buy her a mode of transport. She bakes so well and teaches us a lot. We can’t wait to tell her, she is going to lose her mind.”
The duo will also look at investing their winnings into a variety of pop-up restaurants “where we host a couple of people in the middle of nowhere. Fifteen guests and we would cook at the end of the table. Just experience a three-course meal with us. We have planned three pop-up restaurants and they are already sold out.”
