The humble beginnings of the world’s darkest character.
Starring: Luke Evans and Dominic Cooper
Plot: Director Gary Shore revamps the myth of one of Hollywood’s most enduring stories as Luke Evans takes on the role of great warrior Vlad the Impaler, who went on to become the household name that is Count Dracula. The horror story is set in Vlad’s homeland of Romania during the Turkish invasion, as Vlad leads his army to see off their attackers. However, when circumstances lead to him losing his soul, his real destiny is realized as a doomed creature of the night.
Remarks: The film takes on a different approach to this timeless tale. There are no huge castles in Transylvania, no sleeping in a coffin and other Dracula stereotypes. The movie, however, sees Vlad The Impaler’s human side which, ironically, led him to sell his soul and become one of the most feared creatures to have ever walked the earth. The film’s story isn’t the best but you won’t be bored. Visually, the film is shot great and uses great camera techniques and angles to get the tone and feel just right. It’s also very refreshing to see the human side of Dracula and see why he had to stoop so low and ultimately ruin his life. The film isn’t amazing. Far from it actually. However, it is a breath of fresh air.
