Zanele Potelwa Steals the Show as Host of the 32nd South African Music Awards

Zanele Potelwa has officially entered her main-character era at the South African Music Awards.

Fresh off a trip to New York, where the much-loved media personality sat down with South African star Thuso Mbedu, Potelwa returned home to take on one of her biggest hosting moments yet: the 32nd South African Music Awards, held Saturday night at Sun City’s Superbowl in the North West province.

Co-hosting alongside artist and entrepreneur Cassper Nyovest, Potelwa brought the kind of effortless warmth, energy and polish that has made her one of South Africa’s most recognisable media personalities. And while the SAMAs have never been short on big performances, major wins and memorable fashion, Potelwa proved to be one of the evening’s standout stars.

This year’s ceremony, dubbed #SAMA32 – The Future Sounds Like Now Now, marked the SAMAs’ return to their original Sun City home, giving the prestigious awards an added sense of occasion. From the nominees and winners to the presenters and performers, the night delivered the spectacle expected from one of the country’s biggest nights in music.

But for Potelwa, the moment represented something even bigger. Her journey with the SAMAs has been one worth watching. She has gone from hosting the red carpet, to becoming the distinctive “voice of God” guiding audiences through the ceremony, and now, to standing centre stage as one of the main hosts of the awards.

It’s a progression that feels both earned and entirely deserved. Potelwa has steadily built a reputation for being able to handle big live moments with a combination of professionalism, personality and infectious energy. At #SAMA32, those qualities were on full display. Whether moving the show along, engaging with her co-host, introducing performances or bringing her own personality to the stage, she looked completely at home.

And then there was the fashion. Potelwa used the SAMAs stage as her own sartorial playground, stepping out in a series of show-stopping looks from some of South Africa’s most exciting designers. Her wardrobe featured pieces by Imprint South Africa, Sihle The Designer, Otiz Seflo, Tailord Black and Hoss By Sass — each look offering a different interpretation of the evening’s glamour, while Potelwa herself remained the common thread.

That same confidence translated to her hosting performance. There was a sense that Potelwa understood exactly what the SAMAs needed from her: enough gravitas to honour the occasion, enough energy to keep the momentum moving and enough personality to make the show feel warm, spontaneous and distinctly South African.

Her rise through the SAMAs ranks also reflects a broader trajectory in Potelwa’s career. She has consistently demonstrated an ability to move between different facets of entertainment media, from radio and television to red-carpet interviews and high-profile international conversations. Her recent New York trip, where she interviewed Mbedu, was another example of her growing presence as an interviewer and media personality capable of holding her own alongside some of the country’s biggest stars.

At #SAMA32, however, the spotlight was firmly on her. The 32nd South African Music Awards may have celebrated the artists shaping the country’s musical future, but Potelwa made a compelling case that the future of South African entertainment hosting is in very capable hands.

From the red carpet to the voice of God to centre stage, watching Zanele Potelwa’s SAMAs journey unfold has been a joy, and #SAMA32 felt like the moment she truly claimed the stage as her own.
