Local singing sensation Jethro Tait is fast cementing himself as one of the greatest pop stars in the country. Not only has he been responsible for smash hits like ‘The Words’ with DJ Kent and ‘Running Wild’ with Pascal & Pearce but he has also been dominating radio charts on his own with the release of hits like ‘Sad’, ‘Who Are You’ and his recent Fleetwood Mac cover of ‘Dreams’. Now, the singer has released his powerful new EP ‘I Don’t Sleep’.
‘I Don’t Sleep’ is a collection of songs that are very personal and honest. The project mainly revolves around Jethro’s feelings towards growing up and entering adulthood as well as touching on some mental health issues which he feels all kind of feed off of each other.
“As I’ve got older I feel like my perspective on life has got a lot darker. I had really big dreams as a kid and somewhere along the line I feel like I stopped believing I would reach them. Which I hate. As a kid I feel like you have this innocent naivety about the world and how things work and It sucks that, that feeling goes away,” Jethro tells us. “I’ve always been a very quiet and introspective person who over thinks a lot. I do battle with depression and anxiety. All of these things kind of came together in writing this EP. It wasn’t just about making things sound nice, I spent a lot of time on every word and every phrase making sure that it all meant something and expressed how I was feeling.”
The EP centers around the project’s title track which is the first song Jethro wrote for the EP. Jethro describes the song as the most honest song he’s written. He started writing the song when he felt like he was at his lowest and he had to acknowledge that he lost sight of his dreams.
“It talks about stepping into adulthood. It’s about how almost overnight it feels like I became an adult and had to figure out who I was and where you fit in with the world around me,” he says. “When I was younger it felt like anything was possible and that life would break my way, but somewhere along the line I lost that feeling. The world is a much darker place than I initially thought and it’s a lot harder to accomplish the things I dreamed of doing. I’ve just kind of fallen into believing that maybe I’m not one of the 1% who’ll reach their dreams but rather part of the 99% who won’t. I’m working towards that not being the case though”
What makes this EP so special is that Jethro isn’t afraid to confront his demons through his music and that is something that has made him such a relatable artist. That, and the fact that he understands how to write music that is both catchy and easy to connect to has helped him stand out from the crowd.
On his debut solo EP, Jethro sounds better than he has ever sounded before. He has found his calling when it comes to the music he has been destined to create – which is music with a purpose. This is an exceptional body of work, not only because is it the perfect introduction to who Jethro is as an artist, but because Jethro has also found a way to tap into the listener’s emotions while shining a light on important topics like love, mental health and more.”
