I don’t know about you guys, but I was glued to my screen every Sunday evening to watch the first season of The Voice South Africa. Richard Stirton landed up winning the show with one of my favourites, Gavin Edwards, placing second. Little did we know that the folks at Universal Music South Africa were also impressed by the singer and offered him a recording contract as well. Now, after weeks in studio, Gavin is ready to drop his brand new single, ‘Sparks’.
The single releases everywhere tomorrow and I’m really keen to see what the singer has been working on. “When I first heard the song, I instantly knew I wanted it,” Gavin tells me as D-day looms closer and closer. “Everything about it made me want to release this as my first single. After getting into the studio, it just all came together and blew us all away.” Gavin explains that he wants his upcoming debut album to be ‘power songs after power songs’.
Gavin has promised to bring something new and fresh to the table but gave us a little hint on what direction we can expect him to take musically. “Take some of Matthew Mole’s acoustic sound, sprinkle it with a bit of Phillip Phillips, mix in some One Republic and pump it up with a little bit of Ben Haenow. Then, stick my voice on it and we have Gavin Edwards sound.” Hmmm… We like it!
The singer reveals that the weeks after appearing on The Voice South Africa were surreal. “It was sad to think that The Voice was over and that we were all going home but it brought a sense of comfort as well. I got to go home to my wife. Now, however, I often get stopped by people complimenting me about my performances on the show and telling me how they missed watching me every Sunday.”
However, along with his new recording contract, brand new single and the hours he will spend in the studio recording his debut album, Gavin has some exciting things happening in his personal life. “My wife and I are expecting our little boy in two months,” he tells me. “Other than that and the new single out on Friday, I just moved to a house in Hartebeespoort, I will be shooting a music video for the new single and I have been booked to perform at the Gospel Skouspel festival. I’m also proud to say that next month I will be celebrating a year of sobriety. It’s been an amazing year so far and I’m so excited for everything else that it still to come.”
Gavin’s new single Sparks will be available this Friday. Do the right thing and support our local music industry by buying the song on iTunes.
