Local singing sensation Sha Sha has been hard at work finishing up her upcoming debut studio album ‘I’m Alive’ – and she’s finally ready to share a glimpse of the record with her fans.
The star just premiered ‘Ungowami’, an amapiano record which serves as the lead single off the upcoming project. Loosely translated as “you are mine,’ the single sees the BET award winner collaborate with DJ and producer Soa Mattrix on a song that’s as beautiful as it is memorable.
Speaking about working with Soa Matrix on the song, “Sha Sha said, “I used to hear his music everywhere. He brings these beautiful chords. I was mostly inspired by the chords; they are actually heart-strings. It was a perfect fit for the lyrics and the perspective on love that the song talks about. Love is always going to be a driver for me. Not only love in relationships but primarily love for yourself.”
Asked if “Ungowami” is an indication of the sound on her upcoming album Sha Sha described it simply as “one of the sounds on the album”. “And there is a more to come. I want to avoid processing the album on behalf of people, I want them to have their own experience and I am very excited to see how it will be received. I like to surprise people.”
Speaking about the upcoming album, which drops 26 August, Sha Sha says “There had to be certain thing within myself that had to happen so I could come alive. It’s more like a rebirth, self-reflection and healing.”
Music lovers globally and Sha Sha’s already substantial fanbase have lots to look forward to on an album that sees Sha Sha work with multiple collaborators in crafting her genre bending Amapiano sound. I’M Alive weaves Afrobeats and R&B into Amapiano and features Ami Faku, Rowlene, A-Reece, Soa Mattrix Kabza De Small, and DJ Maphorisa, among many others.
“There are 30 collaborators on the album,” says Sha Sha ahead of the album’s release. “I think every single one of them brought a special contribution to my project. I am very proud of us as a team and the music we have created. I think there are some great surprises there and excited for people to discover the diversity of the music we have created.”
