There’s an exciting new face making waves on the local indie pop front. Ruby Gill has been writing for other artists and is finally stepping into the limelight as she readies her debut album. As the finishing touches are put on the record, the singer has dropped ‘Fault’, the lead single off the album – and I’m pleasantly surprised.
I think that the first thing that stands out is the singer’s strong, powerful vocal. I hear a lot of Lana Del Rey in her vocal; however, Ruby’s takes a more energetic approach to her music. Much like Lana, however, there is so much substance in the song-writing. The song is described as “a profound understanding of the fullness and darkness of relationships, and hints at a feminist stand that all young women need to take.” There song is dark and almost angry and shows an interesting side of the artist. Oh, and it has some of the best percussion I’ve heard in a long time.
Ruby reveals that her debut album “will be the soundtrack to this generation’s attempt at adulting, with all the lightness, and heaviness, of human folly.” She has been working with former Zebra & Giraffe front-man Greg Carlin on the album, and it’s a project he’s really excited to be a part of. “Working with Ruby on these tracks has been such a satisfying experience for me,” he tells me. “She’s a fantastic songwriter and musician, but most importantly has a unique style and voice that sets her apart from the crowd. It was also fun to push her into new spaces, sonically and performance wise, and get the results I wanted. I’m excited for everyone to hear these tracks and the rest of the album we’re working on!” Remember to support local music and buy the song off iTunes.
