American singer and producer, Pharrell, is at the top of his game at the moment. Not only was his smash hit ‘Happy’ one of the biggest songs of 2014, but he has also featured on tracks such as ‘Blurred Lines’ and ‘Get Lucky’ and his latest album ‘GIRL’ did decently on the charts as well. Now, thanks to his collaboration with Woolworths, Pharrell performed shows in Johannesburg and Cape Town – and I was there.
Jimmy Nevis opened for Pharrell on his local tour while GOODLUCK rocked a private Woolies event held the night before. I’ve known Jimmy for a while but this was the first time I saw him take on such a huge platform – and man, did he rock it! He belted out singles such as ‘Elephant Shoes’ and my personal favourite ‘7764’ and had the crowd eat out of the palm of his hands. Jimmy pulled out all the stops. His vocals were on point, he looked like a rock star and he put on one hell of a show!
Pharrell put on a fantastic show as well. While I’ve always respected the singer, I don’t think I could ever call myself a fan. That being said, watching him live proved just how his music made an impact on my life. He produced for artists such as Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Robin Thicke and Jennifer Lopez.
The singer is an entertainer through and through. He gave me goosebumps when he performed ‘Get Lucky’ and ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’ and gave his all to each and every track. It was great to see him performing the tracks he featured on as well as his original music – especially the NER*D stuff! He gave the crowd what they wanted and, in turn, most left with a huge smile on their face.
While his stage presence was average at best, Pharrell let the music take over and when you have as many hits as he does, the nitty-gritty doesn’t really matter anymore, does it?
The show was great. Again, this wasn’t the best show I have ever seen, but Pharrell is a boss. I would gladly buy tickets to watch him again. Now, if only I can get that irritating ‘Happy’ song out of my damn head!
