The Parlotones
Trinckets, Relics & Heirlooms (Gallo Music)
Breakdown: It’s been a year since The Parlotones dropped their ninth studio album ‘Antiques & Artefacts’ and 2016 has been a big one for the band. Despite their incredible ‘orchestrated’ tour, front-man Kahn Morbee was a coach on The Voice South Africa while Glenn Hodgson’s side-project ‘Lost & Found’ dropped their debut album. Now, the band is back with a brand new EP ‘Trinkets, Relics & Heirlooms’ which includes 6 unreleased tracks from the ‘Antiques & Artefacts’ sessions, Kahn’s Coke Studio collaboration with Solo, Kahn’s Xperia Mashlab collaboration with Das Kapital and four solo Kahn and Lost & Found tracks.
How Many Good Tracks: 8 of the 12.
What I Liked: The Parlotones are incredible – and the proof is in their music. Kahn’s vocals are out of this world and he, yet again, puts this on full display on this EP. I love how the band played around with African and brassy sounds on some of the new tracks on the album and how they add them into their signature sound. The concept behind the album is great. The band split the record up into three parts – hence the title ‘Trinkets, Relics & Heirlooms.’ The Parlotones are incredibly strategic about the music they make and the way they release music and you can hear it within the many layers of their songs. If you’re a fan of the band, this is an EP you need to own.
What I Didn’t Like: There isn’t a lot of new material here. We’ve heard the Kahn and Lost & Found tracks before and the six new songs are incredibly short and, honestly, don’t sound complete. Despite this, I appreciate that the band has given fans something new to whet their appetite while we wait for a new album.
