Joe Jonas made his highly anticipated musical comeback back in 2015 when he dropped his new single ‘Cake By The Ocean’ with his brand new group DNCE. The song went on to become a massive single around the world and formally introduced the world to the group. Now, with three smash hits under their belt, the group have finally released their self-titled debut record, one I’ve had great expectations for, but, unfortunately, its underwhelming.
I know, its bizarre to read considering the group are behind hits such as ‘Body Moves’ and ‘Toothbrush’ and the truth is, it’s not all bad. The group have found a gap in the market and went for it. Much as the singles suggest, the songs are filled with groovy guitar riffs, brass and fantastic percussions as the group blend pop, jazz, funk and soul music together in a pretty unique way. Joe Jonas also needs to be commended for his fantastic vocal performance on the record. He manages to wow despite the album’s fun, quirky tone.
However, the album isn’t as strong as the lead singles suggest. Unfortunately, the album becomes very predictable and, honestly, it’s an album of fillers. The problem is that the three singles are incredibly strong and most of the other tracks just can’t seem to level with them. In fact, some songs come across incredibly messy and unpolished which is very confusing to hear alongside the pop gems the band is known for.
This album is not without its flaws, however, it also shows huge potential for DNCE. They’re changing the face of pop music and have delivered a product unrivaled by anyone else at the moment (although I do hear a lot of Maroon 5 at times). DNCE are still trying to figure out their identity but once they iron that out, the group will be a formidable name in pop music.
