Review: Britney Spears – Glory (Deluxe Edition)

Britney Spears
Glory (Sony Music)

Breakdown: After bursting onto the scene 17 years ago with her debut album ‘…Baby One More Time’, Britney Spears has become one of the most formidable artists in pop music today. She has a perfume empire, a residency in Las Vegas and has just released her ninth studio album ‘Glory’ which features the new single ‘Make Me’ featuring G Eazy.

How Many Good Tracks: 9 of the 17.

What I Liked: This is a side of Britney we haven’t seen before. Not only has the star matured in content, but she finally seems comfortable with the music she creates. The production on the album is some of the best we’ve seen from Britney since her ‘Blackout’ album. The singer has taken more creative risks this time around as she explores a variety of sub-genres within her signature pop sound. The experimentation is exciting and she gives us a glimpse of the Britney who changed the face of pop music in the early 2000s.

What I Didn’t Like: Britney, again, uses heavy vocal filtration systems that it’s hard to remember what her real voice sounds like. The truth is, Britney is a lazy recording artist – and the lack of effort shows. While her vocals on ‘Glory’ are far less processed than on her previous album ‘Britney Jean’, Britney still gives a weak vocal performance. Lyrically, the tracks lack substance as well, which is unfortunate because the songs have potential to be great with a bit of lyrical tweaking. Despite this, the album is a vast improvement over ‘Femme Fetale’ and ‘Britney Jean’ and it’s great to see Britney heading in the right direction.

Best Track: Better

Rating: 2.5/5
