Review: ADAM – Hoogtevrees

ADAM
Hoogtevrees (Universal Music)

Breakdown: After collaborating with Daniel Baron on a fantastic English EP, Afrikaans group ADAM are back with their fourth studio album ‘Hoogtevrees’. The group released the title track as the lead single off the album which has been met with a positive response from audiences across the country.

How Many Good Tracks: 9 of the 12.

What I Liked: ADAM is one of the most exciting acts on the Afrikaans music scene at the moment. Not only has their music been consistent ever since they released their first album back in 2011, but each member brings in their own strength and adds so much value to every aspect of the group. The group takes an edgier approach to pop music and, therefore, target a younger audience than many of their colleagues. Lyrically, the album is incredibly strong while still catchy enough to sing along to. Sonically, the group has been inspired by the folk trend that has dominated pop music over the past few years and they blend it with other pop and country elements which makes this quite an exciting album to listen to. The group also has some exciting collaborations on the album with acts such as Die Heuwels Fantasties and Vaughan Gardiner. Vocally, the group is sounding better than ever and they’ve created one of the best albums of their career. PS – the iTunes deluxe edition contains a collection of acoustic tracks!

What I Didn’t Like: I would have liked to hear a few more ballads on the album. The group have an amazing vocal ability and it would have been great to hear them – especially since tracks like ‘Dagdroom’ are highlights off the album.

Best Track: Vergifnis

Rating: 4/5
