Devastating news as police and family members confirm the untimely passing of rapper Kiernan Forbes, affectionately known to many as AKA. The rapper and music producer Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane were murdered during a drive-by shooting outside of a restaurant on Durban’s popular Florida Road.
The incident took place just after 10pm and ahead of a scheduled performance at a Durban club.
The rapper’s parents Tony and Lynn Forbes confirmed the news by issuing a statement in the early hours of the morning.
“Our son was loved and he gave love in return. In this time of grief, we appeal for your compassion, space and time to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days,” they said in a statement.
“To many, he was AKA, SUPERMEGA, BHOVA and many other names,” they said. But to them, he was Kiernan Jarryd Forbes – a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, friend, and most importantly, a father to his daughter Kairo.
“We thank you for the love and support we have received thus far and ask you to continue to keep us in your prayers and uplifted in the Lord,” the parents added.
ALS Paramedics Medical Services spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said resuscitation efforts at the scene were unsuccessful. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda previously confirmed that a “well-known rapper” had been gunned down in Florida Road, Durban on Friday just after 22:00.
AKA was known for hit singles like ‘Fela in Versace’, ‘Composure’, ‘Run Jozi’, ‘Congratulations’ and many more. He has also been hard at work promoting his upcoming album ‘Mass Country‘ which is scheduled to be released in two weeks.
The rapper was also a SAMA winner and was nominated twice at the BET Awards.
