She’s the host of one of the most exciting new Afrikaans shows at the moment, Musiek Roulette, and has just released her brand new album Skildery and it seems that Nadine is unstoppable. Her brand new single ‘Tyd’ is one of her biggest songs to date and she proves to us that vocally, she has what it takes to keep her at the top. El caught up with Nadine and discussed her new music, her passion for the industry and who she would love to collaborate with!
You’ve been in the entertainment industry for a long time, where did your passion start from?
My passion for the music industry would have to come from my mother’s side of the family although I truly believe that one is born with a passion inside them – whether it be for sport, politics or music. When I was a kid, my three sisters and I would always listen to music. My mom loved music and played it a lot. I was definitely born with an interest in music and expressed it a lot. I took it further from there and as they say, the rest is history.
Your new single ‘Tyd’ is a huge hit. Tell us more about that song.
When I recorded my new album, Skildery, the first demo I received was ‘Tyd’. Back in 2008, I released an English album titled ‘This Time I Know’ and it had a song called ‘This Time I Know It’s For Real’ and I’ve been searching for a song like that in Afrikaans for a long time. ‘Tyd’ was the first song I found that was a strong Afrikaans power ballad. The song is strong and melodic and the first time I heard it, I knew I had to have it on my album. I’ve been working on my vocals a lot over the past few months and this song isn’t easy to sing at all but it’s one I’m very proud of.
How different is your new album ‘Skildery’ from other material we’ve heard from you before?
While this is a pop album, Skildery is very vocal driven. My previous material has never been this focused on the vocals but more on the melodies. Also, the melodies on this album are stronger than ever before and I am so proud of that. This is also the first time that I have had so many radio-friendly tracks on one album in my 19 years as a singer.
Which track on the new album means the most to you?
That’s a difficult one. I would have to say the title track, Skildery. The song is about someone who wants to create a beautiful painting but can’t find the colours to do so. It’s a very symbolic song for me because that’s exactly where I was at when writing the album. At the start of the process, I couldn’t find the right material, producers or songwriters. Once I spoke to Johan Oberholzer, who became my producer, everything fell into place. The songs, the production everything fell into place.
What’s one thing that no one knows about you?
I am very hard on myself. I don’t give myself enough credit for all my achievements. I don’t like to celebrate things I accomplish and rather focus on the next thing. I am very grounded in that sense.
Which local artist would you love to collaborate with one day?
Internationally it would have to be Bruno Mars. His melodies are so cool! I’ve always thought it’s more difficult to make it as a pop singer than someone who sings ballads. When you sing a ballad, you impress someone with your voice but a pop singer has to find the right melody as well. Locally, I’d love to do a song with Freshlyground. I love that they are one big family. They are so representative of South Africa and their music brings people together.
What can we expect from you in the next few months?
The next few months are incredibly busy and I am at the happiest place I have ever been in. I am going to be filming the second season of Musiek Roulette. This season will be even more exciting because I have been asked to sing as well. The focus will be on the guests but I have a short stint in the beginning which is exciting. I’m my own record label now so that’s also an exciting step for me going forward. I will be doing a Christmas extravaganza and a few collaborations as well. Lastly, I will be joining Jonathan Roxmouth as his special guest at his Montecasino shows.
