The past year has been massive for Mobi Dixon. He released his latest album ‘Live The Music’ which includes the massive anthems ‘Trigger’ and ‘Mixed Up Chick’ as well as new single ‘Ezizweni’. The album was so well-received that it won the Best Dance Album at this year’s Metro FM awards as well as a SAMA nomination in the dance category as well. Now, as his career continues to rise, the DJ chats to us about the album, award season and tying the knot!
Your new album ‘Live The Music’ has been so well-received. Why do you think so many around the country have identified with the music you have created on the record?
The music is genuine and is crafted with a musical approach. The messages in the songs represent issues that people deal with on a daily that people identify with but can dance to at the same time. It’s something special.
The album won the Metro FM Award for Best Dance album and you have just been nominated for two SAMAs. How important are awards to you?
Awards are important in a sense that they give you affirmation from the industry that you are doing a great job. For me they are also motivation for me to keep working hard. I’m really honoured to have my name associated with such big awards.
Dance music is massive around South Africa. What do you think it is about your take on the genre that sets you apart?
My sound is unique and unpredictable. People always look forward to hearing what I will do next. It all falls under a sun genre I created called Tribal Soul which fuses ethnic rhythmic elements with soulful melodies but the fact that I am unpredictable is something that sets me apart.
You worked with some incredible artists on the record. What attracted you to this list of musicians?
Most of the collaborations came naturally. I believe that collaborations should be organic when artists connect musically. I am so proud of the magic we managed to create on the album.
The album includes two remixes. How different is the production process on a remix than that of an original production?
The approach will always be different because you are working with something that already exists. For me it’s a matter of enhancing the original with my flavor and sometimes experimenting with new sounds.
In your opinion, what makes the perfect dance song?
For me, there should always be a balance between the dance factor and the musical factor which gives it longevity.
What inspired your new single ‘Ezizweni’?
Ezizweni is a special song because Berita and I planned to do for about 3 years so when the time came we were both so inspired. That is why the lyrics and instrumentation are strong. It’s a song we both believe in.
You recently got married as well. Congrats! Tell us a bit about your big day.
Thank you so much. It was a great family occasion where lobola negotiations were completed and I was welcomed with warm hands into her family. There was lots of music and dance and I’m in a very happy place right now.
What can fans expect from you over the next few months?
There’s a few exiting projects in the pipeline including remixes I did for Maxwell, Davido, Tinashe and Anatii. I also recently released a song I did with Bucie called ‘Love Me Right’. The highlight of the year though is my 10 year anniversary concert and documentary later in the year. It’s something you should all keep an eye out for.
