Off The Record With: ChianoSky

ChianoSky has been MIA since releasing her disco-inspired album ‘Inferno’. However, she has been hard at work planning the next phase of her career. She signed a record deal with Sony Music Africa and started experimenting with a different sound. Now, after dropping her successful comeback single ‘Worst That Could Happen’, the singer has released her brand new EP – ‘Hurricane’. The five-track EP features three brand new tracks and two remixes. This week, we chat to the star about the release, advice for girls wanting to get into the industry and what the future has in store for her.

We’re obsessed with your new single ‘Worst That Could Happen’. What inspired the song?

The song describes the challenges that life throws us every day. Its message is to be fierce in the choices we make and to be fearless in its consequences as well.

The song is your first since you signed to Sony Music. Why is this song the perfect introduction to your next chapter?

I’m very excited about my new chapter with Sony. We released this song as the lead single because we thought it would showcase my growth and maturity as an artist – something that will excite my fans.

You’ve just released your new EP ‘Hurricane’. Tell us a bit about the creation process behind it.

There was a lot of experimentation in the studio when I created this album. I was able to discover and reveal new sides to myself as an artist which was interesting. It was also interesting to play with different sounds and dip into other genres as well. I approached my music from a different perspective lyrically. I was also excited to work with Emblazon on the production. We worked really well together and I have so much respect for him.

What inspired the songs on the new EP?

Change. A lot of change has come about since my last release so these songs revolve around these new beginnings in love, life and within.

How different is the EP to your previous album ‘Inferno’?

Inferno was a disco inspired album that I had to release for myself. I had to explore my love for the 70’s. Hurricane, and the sound I will dabble in going forward, will be more on the urban side – a space I relate to strongly. I want to stretch myself with every release. I don’t think I could ever be comfortable in one genre which is why every release has been so exciting.

What is the scariest part of releasing new music?

I guess it’s the process of putting yourself out there all over again. You’re never really sure what to expect and you just hope people will capture your vision – even if it’s just for a moment.

Many young musicians look at your journey as a source of inspiration. What advice would you give young girls wanting to break out into the music industry?

I think it’s important to practice as much as you can. Do the research, write as much as you can and don’t be afraid to talk about your talent and aspirations because you never know who is listening. The world is all about collaboration right now so try and connect with people who have the same ambitions as you. Oh, and perform at every opportunity you can.

Now that the EP is out, what else can we expect from you over the next few months?

The EP is just an introduction back. I am back and I still have so much music to share with the continent. I will be taking these new songs on the road so keep an eye out for some exciting performances very soon.
