Mila Smith Makes Explosive Debut With ‘Liars And Fakes’

Every now and then, a new artist makes their musical debut in the most refreshing and interesting way – and local songstress Mila Smith has done just that. The funky track is paired with a bright music video – and effortlessly commands attention.

The powerful pop track is about being let down by friends – a topic most of us can relate to. Mila wanted to create a song that people can both relate to but tap their feet in the process – and the result is a slice of pop perfection.

“Liars and Fakes is a song I hope everyone can bop along to. The title of the song is relatively self-explanatory – it calls out the liars and the fakes,” Mila explains. “It was written about someone who communicated with me very superficially and only associated with me for their own gain, rather than chasing a genuine friendship”.

As mentioned, the track is paired with a lively music video directed by Anna Telford and Felix Seuffert of Butterfly Films in Cape Town. Speaking about making the video, Anna and Felix explain that “The basic idea for the Liars and Fakes video came from Mila herself who envisioned a film around roller skating. Reflecting the words of the song, we created a story about being bold, leaving the pretence behind and embracing the people that really matter”.

Growing up on a varied diet of artists including Adele, Beyoncé, Dua Lipa and The Neighbourhood, Mila has surrounded herself with music from an early age and began writing her own music at eight years old, playing the piano by ear and composing her own songs. By the age of 11 Mila had formed her own indie-pop band and they released their debut EP ‘Possibility’ in 2016.

Now, she’s ready to make a mark all on her own – and she couldn’t have chosen a more polished track to make her debut with.

We’ll certainly be keeping our eye on Mila Smith.
