Major Lazer blew up the charts with their most recent release ‘Cold Water’. The Justin Bieber and MØ collaboration became one of the biggest dance hits of 2017 so, naturally, there was a lot of pressure to bring the heat with their next release. So, Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire brought out the big guns and tapped PartyNextDoor and Nicki Minaj for their new dancehall smash ‘Run Up’.
While ‘Cold Water’ leaned more towards a dance sound, ‘Run Up’ sees Major Lazer go back to their reggae roots while still ensuring the song has commercial appeal. PartyNextDoor takes control of the song as he gives a melodic performance throughout the chorus and the first and second verses before Nicki Minaj delivers another flawless rap with a strong tropical feel. Truthfully, the song isn’t as strong as ‘Cold Shoulder’ or ‘Lean On’ but still packs a punch and I have a feeling this song will be all over our radio stations over the next few months.
“It’s always important for us to work with people who are on the same wave,” says Diplo. “Nicki and Party really helped us bring the classic Major Lazer style to create this perfect party record.” Walshy Fire adds that “Major Lazer is all about making the world smaller by making the party bigger. This felt like the perfect song to start off 2017.” One thing is for sure – this is going to start the weekend off in style!
