Fans of the legendary Lauryn Hill have been waiting for the star to come and perform on South African soil so when Big Concerts announced that the star and rapper Nas would be performing in Johannesburg on the 2nd of February, thousands flocked to get their hands on tickets. The star, however, has an infamous reputation for being late and/or not performing at all. So, with just days away from the star’s concert, rumours started to spread. However, Lauryn put an end to the rumours quickly with a statement ensuring fans that the performance will definitely be happening.
“I got word that some people were doubtful that Nas and I were coming to Johannesburg to play. From the first day we started putting the tour together, playing Africa was a must. Not only are we coming, but we’re coming to establish an important president (TO ME).”
The singer adds that she has big plans to tour the entire continent in the future. “I would like to play across continental Africa as completely and as often as I play in Europe and other international markets.”
Of the tour the star says that “This album chronicled an intimate piece of my young existence. It was the summation of most, if not all, of my most hopeful and positive emotions experienced to that date. I Loved and believed deeply in my community’s ability to both Love and heal itself provided it received the right amount of support and encouragement. Our world today, both complex and changing, is in need of the balance between moral fortitude and cathartic expression. I hope the Love and energy that permeated this work can continue to inspire change with Love and optimism at the helm.”
The star is currently celebrating the 20th anniversary of ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.’ The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and sold 422,624 copies in its first week – breaking the record for first-week sales by a female artist.
