Lady Zamar On Being Unappreciated In Mzansi: “Collide Had To Blow Up Internationally To Get Taken Seriously Here”

Lady Zamar, besides being an incredible performing artist, is also not one to keep quiet on important topical issues. She’s never been afraid to take to social media and speak up on matters that are important to her and in a recent Instagram Live chat with Nadia Nakai, the star opens up about how she feels unappreciated in the local music space.

In the insightful chat, Lady Zamar tells Nadia that her smash hit ‘Collide’ was only taken seriously in South Africa after it started making waves internationally. The star admits that radio stations voiced their concerns with the song when initially pitched but after the song started blowing up outside of our borders, they seemed to have changed their tune.

“My listenership ranges from America to the UK and Botswana. Everyone outside the country will appreciate my music. With ‘Collide’, the reason it became a big song in SA was because it was a big song outside the country first. Then they jumped on. Now that it is number one in another country, you want to jump on it?” the singer said in the interview.

In the conversation, Nadia added that she has also experienced some setbacks adding that her music would most likely be better received if she was a male. “I learnt that people are not ready to hear female narratives. They are really not ready. They will be excited to hear a male artists’ album, and there will be a whole lot of vibe. With my album, I didn’t feel that. I felt like they didn’t feel they could relate,” the rapper says.
