It’s hard to believe that it’s already been three years since the horrific shooting which took place at the popular Orlando gay club ‘Pulse’. Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old American security guard, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in what became the biggest mass shooting on the LGBTQ+ community ever. Naturally, the attack had a lasting impression on so many people around the world and, for Joe Foster and Johan C Venter, the effects are still rife.
So, as today marks three years since the devastating attack, the singers, whose duet “Hoe Moes Ek Weet” did incredibly well, went back into the studio and recorded a tribute to those who were murdered by Mateen at the nightclub. The song is an Afrikaans cover of ‘Feel My Pulse’, a song American singer songwriters Eli Lieb and Brandon Skeie wrote following the devastating attack. The duo connected with the lyrical content and knew they wanted to record an Afrikaans version.
Joe Foster and Johan C Venter were just as hit by the mass shooting as many other South African people were. So, they sent their version of the song to Eli Lieb and the other authors who put their stamp of approval on the Afrikaans version of the song.
So, as we continue to celebrate Pride Month, the duo have released a striking video for the track hoping that they can make some sort of difference through their music. “This is my charity,” Joe says, “I want to bind our people where division and rejection in gender and sexual orientation tore our youth and community apart and put the LGBTQ+ community in a vulnerable position”.
