Last year, ANN7 and the South African of the Year Awards brought out Nicole Scherzinger and Ella Henderson to perform at their first ceremony. This year, the awards are going to be bigger and better as the channel announces that Jason Derulo, Christina Aguilera and a variety of local acts will take to the stage when the ceremony takes place on the 17th of October at the TicketPro Dome in Northgate.
According to the press release, “The awards both celebrate and honour prominent and unheralded South Africans excelling in various fields . These range from business, sport, entertainment, civil society, entrepreneurship and politics as well as ordinary South Africans making a difference in the country. The main category is the South African of the Year Award, which is currently held by the Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela.”
The channel’s editor-in-chief and the person responsible for this year’s award ceremony, Moegsien Williams said that “While we are celebrating all things South African, our intention is, at the same time, to market the country and showcase the wide array of talented, innovative, industrious, high-achieving and successful people in our land and within all spheres. This is why, strategically, we secure major international acts each year. The South African of the Year Awards is a prestigious event featuring and attended by the Who’s Who of South Africa. We are therefore proud to have an artist as talented and socially responsible as Christina Aguilera.”
I must be honest and say I am so excited about their choice in international artists this year as both Jason Derulo and Christina Aguilera are doing incredible things at the moment – just like all the nominees in this year’s categories. Now, since hip-hop was so huge over the past year, I’d like to see some local rappers on the bill and everything will be perfect in my eyes! SO looking forward to this year’s ceremony.
Ahead of the awards, remember to catch the awesome Maps Maponyane as he hosts ‘I Am South African’ every Monday to Saturday at 18:00 on the news network. Tickets for SATY 2015 will soon be available on Ticketpro.
