Afrikaans movies have been on a new level this year. Movies such as ‘Noem My Skollie’, ‘Vir Altyd’, ‘Vir Die Voels’ and many more have wowed us over the past few months and the 2017 slate is looking just as hot. One of the first releases of 2017 is the highly anticipated new film ‘Hoener Met Die Rooi Skoene’ and Afrikaans pop star Jak de Priester has been tapped to sing the film’s official theme song.
“It is a great honour to write the theme song for this Koos Roets film. It has been a while since I last wrote something for TV or film and I was very excited when I was approached for this project,” Jak says. “It was a challenge to write a song for the movie with only a press release and unedited trailer at my disposal. I, however, immediately knew that the song had to have a lively, fifties vibe. The movie title was also included in the lyrics. I hope that the song does the movie justice and tells a story that will inspire audiences to go and see the film.”
The film tells the tale of Bonnie, a receptionist at the internationally acclaimed De Waal Theatre Agency. While chatting away on the office phone one evening, her boss – the successful but infamous business man and impresario Du Toit de Waal is murdered. She discovers his body behind the desk in his office and immediately phones the police, after which she habitually blacks out. When she comes to after her blackout, with the flashlight of Constable Mickey Mentz shining in her eyes, the body has mysteriously disappeared… This sets the stage for a thrilling hilarious thriller-comedy with surprising twists, in which the receptionist and her witty parrot and the cantankerous, irritable and flu-ridden police inspector, Captain Hendrik Greyling, is central.
Hoener Met Die Rooi Skoene will be released in cinemas across the country on 27 January 2017 but, luckily, we don’t have to wait that long to hear a snippet of the single. We’ve got a short clip of the track before it’s radio and digital release. Listen here:
