When asked to think about a magic show, our minds quickly go to card tricks, clowns and kiddies parties but there’s so much more to the mystery of illusion – and it’s something that has taken the world by storm. From residencies in Vegas or Broadway to international tours, there are several major productions that put on dazzling productions and, lucky for us, The Illusionists encompass it all!
The act has just started the Johannesburg run of their South African tour after wowing audiences in Cape Town and it’s safe to say the hype is real. The show is everything you expect from a magic show and more. It’s glamorous, fun and mind-blowing.
The Illusionists showcases the jaw dropping talents of seven of the most incredible illusionists on earth. There’s Darcy Oake (The Grand Illusionist), David Williamson (The Trickster), Ben Blaque (The Weapons Master), Krendl (The Escapologist), Den Den (The Manipulator), Chris Cox (The Mentalist) Mark Kalin (The Showman) and Jinger Leigh (The Conjuress). Each act brings something different and unique to the table and the fact that each illusionist has their own talent keeps audiences captivated from start to finish.
Expect to see a hilarious mentalist skit which will have you in stitches, a death-defying underwater escape which is bound to increase your heart rate, an impressive, jaw-dropping cross-bow demonstration and a whole lot of magical illusions that will have you amazed. In fact, I’m still trying to figure out how everything was possible.
While everything on stage is world-class, what makes The Illusionists so special is the amount of audience interaction integrated into the show. Chris Cox shares some mind-blowing personal facts about random audience members while Mark and Jinger magically link the rings of three audience members. There was a moment, however, where David Williamson ‘trains wild animals’ – ie children from the audience. Now, this obviously depends on the children chosen every night but we had four hilariously adorable children who completely stole the show. Being entertained by everyday kids made both the audience and the children themselves believe in magic all over again.
The show is two and a half hours of fun. You’re guaranteed to be amazed with every single act and performer on the stage and that says something. The Illusionists gives audiences the escape they need and will leave them inspired in the possibilities the world has to offer. This is a spectacular show that you don’t want to miss.
