In 2018, pop star Demi Lovato sent shockwaves around the world after she overdosed on a mix of heroin and other drugs after attending a party. The overdose saw Demi minutes away from losing her life as she relapsed from over six years of sobriety. Now, the star gets candid as she opens up about the incident on her new documentary and single titled ‘Dancing With The Devil’.
Together the album, titled ‘Dancing With The Devil… The Art Of Starting Over’ and documentary see Demi sharing the story of her near fatal overdose in 2018 for the first time, as well as giving a glimpse into her life today and her path to healing. The deeply personal album is executive produced by Lovato and her manager, Scooter Braun.
Demi has always strived to be an open book and alongside the chilling lyrics of the single which detail moments of the terrifying night, Demi has also released a powerful music video for the track.
With scenes from the bar, on an ambulance gurney, and in the hospital, Demi recreated her 2018 near-fatal overdose for the music video alongside the direction of Michael D. Ratner. The details depicted in the music video are accurate from the night of her overdose, down to wearing the same jacket and having the same hair and makeup.
“Creating the music video for #DancingWithTheDevil was not the easiest shoot I’ve ever done…,” Demi captioned the video. “I create my art to heal, and to inspire others. I’m here today and I’m happy you are too.”
In the documentary, Demi relives that night saying “I picked up a bottle of red wine [one] night, and it wasn’t even 30 minutes before I called someone that had drugs on them,” she said.
“I’m surprised that I didn’t OD that night,” Lovato continued. “I ended up at a party and ran into my old drug dealer from six years before. That night I did drugs I had never done before. I’m really lucky to be alive.”
