If Chris Werge’s face looks familiar, you may remember that he was a contestant on the recent season of The Voice South Africa. Now, however, as the show has crowned its winner, Chris has just dropped his brand new single On My Mind and proves that you don’t have to win a talent show to release some incredible music.
On My Mind is a beautiful guitar-driven pop track that blends western and African pop sounds into something that is truly unique. The simple yet effective beat and the gentle guitar instantly catch the listener’s attention while putting Chris’ vocals on show. We do, however, think there isn’t a distinct enough difference sonically between the verse and the chorus which makes the chorus sound a little flat at parts. Despite this, Chris’ vocals are strong and clean and he proves exactly why he got so far in the local reality show.
Lyrically, Chris delivers a stellar performance. I’m a big fan of artists using music as a form of storytelling and the singer has done exactly that. “I wrote the song to express the anxiety felt in a relationship, wanting to know the outcome based on what the other person felt,” Chris says on the topic many of us can relate to. “The song was inspired by a friend of mine. We went on a few dates a few years ago. That uncertainty of the future just made me anxious and writing a song was a way I processed that time in my life.” Chris did a fantastic job on his lead single and it’s definitely made us even more excited to see what else he has to offer.
