Global pop star Billie Eilish made headlines a few years ago when she discussed her decision to wear oversized clothing as a statement against body shaming and bullying. Now, in a new feature with VOGUE, the star has flipped the script and is showing off her body in a bid to shine a light on the topic.
“It’s all about what makes you feel good,” the 19-year-old said as she dons her pin-up style for the photoshoot. “If you want to get surgery, go get surgery. If you want to wear a dress that somebody thinks that you look too big wearing, f–k it. If you feel like you look good, you look good.”
On her decision to show off her body in the feature, Billie says “You’re a hypocrite if you want to show your skin, and you’re easy. … If I am, then I’m proud. F–k it, y’know? Let’s turn it around and be empowered in that.”
In the shoot, Billie wears a custom Alexander McQueen dress and a Atsuko Kudo latex stockings and gloves. She also dons a Mugler catsuit and corset, then a semi-sheer Burberry one that gave a glimpse of her tattoo – which runs from her hip to her thigh.
Billie first spoke about her tattoo in November 2020 during an interview with Vanity Fair saying “You won’t ever see it.” Billie went on to say that she feels comfortable expressing herself, “I feel more like a woman, somehow. Because of the way that I feel that the world sees me, I haven’t felt really desired,” she says. “But that’s really my whole life, though, so I don’t know if it’s anything to do with fame.”
The star adds that the shoot comes just in time as she recently dropped her brand-new single ‘Your Power’ – and aims to reclaim hers as she turns heads.
“It’s an open letter to people who take advantage – mostly men,” Billie says of the song. “I would like people to listen to me. And not just try to figure out who I’m talking about, because it’s not about that. It’s really not at all about one person. You might think, ‘It’s because she’s in the music industry’ – no, dude. It’s everywhere. I don’t know one girl or woman who hasn’t had a weird experience, or a really bad experience. And men, too – young boys are taken advantage of constantly.”
Once Billie shared the images on her social media accounts, the pictures racked up over 1 million likes in just six minutes – proving that the star has made the impact she was hoping for – smashing an Instagram record in the process.
