Sad news! If you were a fan of the popular Aces’n’Spades bar in Cape Town, you’ll be devastated to know that the venue has made the difficult decision to close its doors as the Covid-19 lockdown and subsequent alcohol ban has made it impossible to the venue to continue with its operation.
The bar is the latest Covid-19 casualty and the news comes just days after Pablo Eggs-Go-Bar, a popular eatery in the vibrant Johannesburg neighbourhood of Melville announced that they will be shutting down their establishment (albeit opening a branch in the new Mint Hotel in Santon).
In a Facebook post confirming the news, owners Reg & Pini say that “We are still at a loss for words. It was our home, your home, it was the place where we made some of our closest friends and favourite enemies, where we met husbands and wives. It has been such a privilege meeting you all, we will carry this experience forever.”
The venue played a significant role in Cape Town’s live music scene and will certainly be missed as the easing of regulations becomes a light at the end of the tunnel for entertainers. “Aces was a passion project and labour of love from its inception right up until the final day. The dream was to keep the genre of rock and roll and independent music alive. A place we could go for fun-filled nights out with like-minded people, meet-ups with friends, and late-night conversations, all while rocking out to our favorite tunes with careless abandon,” the duo continue. “We wanted to showcase the depth of the local music scene and put on quality live shows with and for our friends and family. Our intentions with Aces’nSpades revolved around making memorable moments for all involved, moments that would outlast the experience, creating crazy beautiful memories to last forever. We have faith that this was achieved many times over when we look back and reflect over our own memories made and we believe these moments will forever be burnt into our psyche.”
