For many South Africans, Dominic Neill will always be remembered as one of the breakout stars of Idols South Africa and the man behind hits like ‘Love You Still’ with DJ Kent and ‘Better Day’ with Joe Louis. But after spending the past few years quietly building an international songwriting career from Berlin, the Johannesburg-born singer is back and he’s teamed up with one of South Africa’s biggest electronic exports for a new single.
‘Flowers Bloom’ sees Neill join forces with producer Sickluv, delivering a melodic dance-pop anthem that blends emotional songwriting with the lush electronic sound that’s helped Sickluv become one of South Africa’s most-streamed producers.
While their careers have taken them in very different directions, the collaboration feels surprisingly natural. Sickluv, the stage name of Vicus van Wyk, has become one of South Africa’s biggest success stories in melodic electronic music. A self-taught producer from the Garden Route, he’s amassed more than 2.5 million monthly Spotify listeners while staying rooted in an unmistakably South African sound. Collaborations with artists including Major League DJz and Thabza De Soul, alongside tracks such as ‘What I Need’, ‘Keep Me Close’, ‘Grateful’, ‘Inkululeko’ and ‘How Could You’, have seen his music travel well beyond local dance floors.
Neill, meanwhile, has been quietly carving out a different kind of international career. After becoming a household name through Idols South Africa, he scored local hits with DJ Kent on ‘Love You Still’, released his debut album and earned a SAMA Record of the Year nomination. A publishing deal with Universal Music eventually took him to Berlin, where he’s spent recent years writing and collaborating on songs that have collectively generated tens of millions of streams around the world.
‘Flowers Bloom’ feels like the meeting point between those two worlds — equally suited to a late-night drive as it is to a packed dance floor.
The track also comes with some serious production firepower behind the scenes. Joining the project is South African-born producer David Balshaw, now based in Los Angeles as part of production team The Imports. Balshaw has become one of the country’s most successful producers on the international stage, with credits spanning John Legend, Clean Bandit and K-pop superstars TWICE, while also working with South African artists including Nasty C, Lloyiso and Lady Zamar. Collectively, the records he’s helped create have amassed hundreds of millions of streams worldwide.
Appropriately, ‘Flowers Bloom’ was created across three continents, Sickluv producing from South Africa’s Garden Route, Neill writing and recording in Berlin, and Balshaw contributing from Los Angeles. “This single says a lot about where South African music is right now,” Balshaw says. “Sickluv built his sound from scratch and it’s travelled everywhere. Dominic’s been in Berlin making pop records. I’ve spent years working out of LA. Put us together and you get something that still sounds like home.”
At a time when South African artists are increasingly making their mark on the global stage without losing sight of where they come from, ‘Flowers Bloom’ feels like another reminder that the country’s musical exports no longer fit neatly into one genre.
For Neill, it’s also something of a homecoming and a chance for South African audiences to reconnect with an artist whose career never stopped evolving, even if it was happening thousands of kilometres away.
If ‘Flowers Bloom’ is anything to go by, the wait has been worth it.
