She’s the newest Disney darling making a name for herself and after releasing a few mediocre singles over the past year or two, Zendaya is finally ready to make a mark on the international music scene with her new single ‘Something New’ – and she’s bringing Chris Brown along for the ride. The track serves as the lead single off her highly anticipated second studio album.
Zendaya takes a predictable approach and blends R&B and pop in a catchy slow jam. The song samples TLC’s 1994 hit ‘Creep’ and is a decent track from the singer. The initial issue I have with the song is the over excessive use of auto-tune on both singer’s vocals. Other than that, the song doesn’t blow me away, however, it’s catchy enough to do the job. Chris Brown’s verse also adds some star-power to the song – something that will elevate it’s credibility.
The production on the song is great thanks to Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Khris Riddick-Tynes. “I would say it’s the new wave of R&B,” she said of the song. “It’s where I think it should be going, or it should be headed; it’s very old-school vibe, but it’s a new-age version.” Again, the song isn’t bad but I’m excited to see what else Zendaya has up her sleeve on this era.
