Long before Neon Dreams, Frank Kadillac was a kid in the back seat of his mother’s car, waiting for K-OS’ ‘Sunday Morning’ to come on the radio. Twenty years later, that same song has come full circle, with the JUNO Award-winning frontman stepping up to sing a new version alongside Toronto DJ and producer 4KORNERS and Vancouver producer SEJO ILAW.
What began as an Afro House-inspired bootleg has evolved into a cross-Canadian collaboration that gives the beloved track a fresh identity, fusing its original emotional pull with melodic electronic production and rhythms built for the dance floor.
For Kadillac, the connection runs deeper than nostalgia. The song that once caught his attention through its beat and melody now resonates with him in an entirely different way. “When I was a kid driving around in the back seat of my mother’s car, there was an artist I used to love hearing on the radio. As soon as I heard ‘every day is Saturday night but I can’t wait for Sunday morning,’ I asked my mom to turn it up,” he recalls.
The opportunity to revisit the song came when SEJO ILAW created a bootleg remix and sent it to 4KORNERS. As the producers began developing the idea, the project took an unexpected turn when Kadillac was invited to lend his vocals to the new version. “When I went and looked at the lyrics, I was shook by how deep the song actually was,” he says. “The young version of me was moved by the beat and melody, and now I was moved by the words.”
That shift in perspective became central to the recording. Kadillac describes the song’s protagonist as someone enjoying life but still searching for something more — someone ready to break free from the cycle he has created for himself. “Escaping the matrix he put himself into,” he explains. “This is me, haha,” he adds with a laugh.
The new ‘Sunday Morning’ retains the spirit of the original while taking it into a different musical space. Afro House rhythms, layered melodies and contemporary electronic production give the track a new sense of movement, connecting the song’s introspective themes with the communal energy of the dance floor.
The collaboration also reflects the artists’ shared connection to South Africa’s electronic music scene. Through his Vancouver event series, Sweet & Sawa, SEJO ILAW has spent years building relationships with South Africa’s electronic music community, while 4KORNERS brings more than 15 years of international DJ experience to the project.
For Neon Dreams, the release offers another dimension to a band that has already built a dedicated following in South Africa through its music and live performances. With Kadillac now living in Cape Town, the connection to the country is becoming even more personal.
Ultimately, the decision to revisit “Sunday Morning” came down to instinct. “My heart told me I should do this. I believe music is meant to be shared,” Kadillac says.
Sharing the song with a new generation is precisely what he hopes the collaboration will achieve. By bringing together a childhood favourite, a renewed lyrical perspective and a fresh electronic sound, the artists are giving “Sunday Morning” another chance to resonate with listeners — this time on dance floors far beyond its Canadian roots. “My hope is for our fans to feel the energy of this song and be moved by the lyrics just as I was as a kid,” Kadillac says.
