Who doesn’t love some good news on a Wednesday morning? Afrikaans rock group, Nagligte, after releasing a lyric video to their debut single ‘Dit Stop Nou’ in September, have officially signed to one of the biggest labels in the country – Universal Music South Africa! The reaction to the band’s lead single was incredible and it seems the folks at the label just couldn’t say no to adding the band to their already impressive local stable which includes artists such as Beatenberg, Heavy K, Zahara, Gangs of Ballet and many more.
“We are thrilled at the opportunity to work with the boys from Nagligte. We’ve wanted to sign a good, cutting edge Afrikaans rock act for a while, and Nagligte tick all of the proverbial boxes. They’re a talented group of guys with a very clear vision of what they want to achieve,” said the label’s Head of A&R, Kevin Grenfell.
The boys, however, put in blood, sweat and tears before landing their record deal. In fact, the band has been together for 15 years! Their journey started back in the year 2000 when Jacobus Brink and Wynand Jonker met at university and decided to start playing music together. Unfortunately, their dream of being in a band didn’t materialize until last year when the two started writing with Daniel Brink. “We were so fed up with our jobs. We just wanted to do something to get out of this rat race”, Jacobus said. And so, the magic started happening.
“We are super excited and honoured to work with the team at Universal Music South Africa and look forward to the road ahead. Their experience, resources and enthusiasm for Afrikaans rock music is fantastic. We look forward to rocking in Afrikaans!” Jacobus revealed. Luckily for us, their album is coming sooner rather than later. The lead single ‘Dit Stop Nou’ is gaining momentum and their debut album ‘Hoop In Die Donker’ will be released next month. I’m excited to see what they bring to the table.
