Mzansi is taking over – and we love to see it! As Tyla continues on her world domination tour having released her debut album ‘Tyla’ a few months ago, the young superstar from Edenvale has nabbed two BET Awards this year.
Tyla nabbed the ‘Best International Act’ and ‘Best New Artist’ awards at the prestigious event and transported the audience to South Africa with a colourful rendition of “Jump” alongside Gunna and Skillibeng.
Meanwhile, Makhadzi also made the country proud and won the award for the ‘Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act’. Finally, Nigerian global star, Tems won the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award for her soul-stirring track ‘Me & U’.
This year’s ceremony also saw Victoria Monét lead winning the Video of the Year and the BET Her Award. USHER was honoured with this year’s Lifetime Achievement BET Award with tributes from Childish Gambino, Keke Palmer, Summer Walker, Coco Jones, Marsha Ambrosius, Chlöe, Tinashe, Teyana Taylor, Victoria Monét and Latto. Will Smith performed for the first time ever on the BET Awards and unveiled his new song “You Can Make It” along with Kirk Franklin, Chandler Moore, and Sunday Service Choir.
Megan Thee Stallion opened the show with an incredible performance of ‘Boa,’ ‘Hiss,’ and ‘Where Them Girls At’ while returning host Taraji P. Henson took centre stage with her opening monologue and performance of ‘It’s About Us,’ playing off Kendrick Lamar’s popular track ‘They Not Like Us.’
Victoria Monét, Shaboozey, GloRilla, Sexxy Red, Latto and Ice Spice also performed while USHER was honoured with this year’s Lifetime Achievement BET Award, recognizing his prolific 30-plus-year career and impact as a songwriter, performer, and record producer and a show-stopping tribute by today’s hottest artists. To honour this achievement, Walmart is granting his charity, New Look, with a $100,000 grant. With Atlanta flair and Usher-inspired choreography, the audience was electrified with tribute performances by:
- Childish Gambino and Keke Palmer opened the tribute with “U Don’t Have To Call” followed by Keke’s rendition of “U Make Me Wanna…”
- Summer Walker performed “Come Through” and “Good Good.”
- Coco Jones performed a sultry rendition of “There Goes My Baby”
- Marsha Ambrosius performed “Superstar”
- Chlöe performed “Good Kisser”
- Tinashe performed “Nice & Slow”
