The Panto Is Back In Town – And Sleeping Beauty Is The Star!

Silly season is here and what better way to celebrate than with the Pantomime! This year, Bernard Jay, alongside Janice Honeyman, are bringing the Sleeping Beauty story to life at Joburg Theatre’s famous pantomime. It’s the story we all know and love, a princess is cursed on the day of her Christening by a wicked fairy. On her 18th birthday, the Princess Aurora-Adora will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. But our Good Fairy Floradora Daisy offers some hope – she changes the spell to ensure that the princess won’t die, but will fall into an enchanted sleep for one hundred years from which she will only awake if kissed by the one she loves, Prince Harry Hunkador the Handsome! Sounds amazing, right?

This year, the stage will be filled with some of the biggest stage stars in South Africa. The legendary Tobie Cronjé will make his comeback to the panto stage after a two-year absence with his hilarious portrayal of Dame Nora Nursey. Sister Act’s Candida Mosoma will also be returning to the Joburg Theatre as the Good Fairy Floradora Daisy. Top Billing presenter, Christopher Jaftha, also makes a return as Prince Harry Hunkador the Handsome. Nicole Fortuin will be playing the role of Princess Aurora-Adora, Timothy Moloi will play Sir Poensface Ponce-a-Lot and Michelle Botha will play the Wicked Fairy Kakkamella Khakibos.

Other cast-members include Matthew Berry as Maaikie Mouse, Dionne Song as Miemsie Mouse, L J Urbani as King Daffy Dum Doodle, Michele Levin as Queen Dolly Dum Dilly and Clive Gilson as Jester Cracker-Jack. “Our Sleeping Beauty will bring the pure magic of pantomime once again to Joburg, mixed with sheer spectacle, special effects, laughter, outrageous puns, double-entendres and the most popular of contemporary music, mixed together with some classic melodies always associated with this story. Not to mention the giant spider, the fateful spinning wheel and That Kiss!” Janice Honeyman tells us. Bernard Jay adds, “This has to be the most exciting – and certainly most romantic – cast we have ever managed to bring together for a Joburg Theatre pantomime.”

The pantomime is always a huge success. Over 30 000 tickets have been sold for this year’s extravaganza so make sure you book today to avoid disappointment. Regular performance ticket prices from November 13th to December 30th range from R215 – R340. Bookings are exclusively through www.joburgtheatre.com or by calling 0861 670 670.
