The Royal Countess Zingara Returns to Johannesburg

After more than a decade away from Johannesburg, The Royal Countess Zingara is making a grand return to the city, and she’s bringing an entirely new world with her.

Opening at Melrose Arch on 20 June 2026, the beloved dinner-cirque experience has unveiled La Dolce Royal, a lavish new production that transforms the iconic Zingara experience into an immersive celebration of African kingdoms, ancient trade routes and the timeless art of hospitality. Following a sold-out and critically acclaimed run in Cape Town, the production is now preparing to captivate Johannesburg audiences with a dazzling blend of circus artistry, theatre, music and fine dining.

At the centre of the experience is a dramatic reimagining of Zingara’s signature Spiegeltent. Long synonymous with the brand’s magical world-building, the mirrored pavilion has been transformed into an ochre-coloured royal enclosure inspired by centuries of cultural exchange across Africa and beyond.

Rather than recreating a specific historical period, visionary designer Richard Griffin has crafted a dreamlike setting that draws from a rich tapestry of influences, including North African craftsmanship, Byzantine ornamentation and architectural motifs gathered from the Countess’s imagined travels.

“The Countess’s journey carried her across Morocco, through the Sahara, to Malta and Mali,” Griffin explains. “What remained with her was not simply the beauty of these places, but the generosity of spirit she encountered there. Across royal courts, desert settlements and bustling crossroads, she discovered traditions of welcome, refinement and grace that now find expression in this new world.”

Directed by Craig Leo and Valentina Leo, La Dolce Royal invites audiences into a realm where fantasy and spectacle collide beneath the glittering canopy of the Spiegeltent. The story unfolds through a cast of eccentric characters, led by a mysterious Timekeeper and the enigmatic Weeping Woman, whose transformation from sorrow to joy serves as the emotional heartbeat of the evening.

The production arrives at a moment when audiences are increasingly seeking immersive, shared experiences, and La Dolce Royal leans fully into that desire. Rather than simply watching a performance, guests become part of a carefully curated journey that combines breathtaking circus acts, live music, theatrical storytelling and a four-course feast.

The international cast assembled for Johannesburg is among Zingara’s most impressive to date.

Former Cirque du Soleil aerial cradle artists Juan Pablo Palacios and Victoria Perez Iacono bring their gravity-defying artistry from Argentina, while Las Vegas-based Rola Bola specialist Axel Perez adds high-wire tension and precision. Joining them are acclaimed South African vocalists Megan Spencer and The Clorettes, alongside a diverse ensemble of performers from around the world.

The result is a production that feels simultaneously intimate and epic. The production is a celebration of human connection delivered through extraordinary skill, visual opulence and theatrical imagination.

Over the years, The Royal Countess Zingara has built a devoted following by blurring the lines between fine dining, live entertainment and fantasy. With La Dolce Royal, the company appears to be pushing that vision further than ever before, creating a world that feels both rooted in cultural storytelling and completely untethered from reality.

For Johannesburg audiences, the return marks the end of a long wait.

And if Cape Town’s sold-out season is any indication, La Dolce Royal could become one of the city’s most sought-after live experiences of 2026.

La Dolce Royal runs at the Arch Pavilion, Melrose Arch, from 20 June until the end of December 2026. Tickets start from R1,360 per person and include a welcome drink, a four-course feast and the full Royal Countess Zingara experience. Reservations are available through Dineplan and the official Zingara website.
