When it comes to Taylor Swift’s album roll-out, you know she’s going to be full of surprises. Today, the star releases her 10th studio album ‘Midnights’ which didn’t have a lead single attached to it until the moment it dropped.
Taylor announced the record while accepting the trophy for Video of the Year at MTV’s Video Music Awards in August and has been teasing it ever since.
The 13 tracks on the album tell “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life,” according to the star. “We lie awake in love and fear, in turmoil and in tears,” she later wrote about the record in two paragraphs displayed across a promotional photo posted to social media. “We stare at walls and drink until they speak back. We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t – right this minute – about to make some fateful life-altering mistake.”
“This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams,” she continued. “The floors we pace and the demons we face. For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching – hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve… we’ll meet ourselves.”
Taylor also revealed that ‘Anti-Hero’ would serve as the lead single off the project with a video set to drop in just hours.
Additionally, Taylor confirmed that ‘Midnights’ will be a visual album and that music videos for the tracks on the project have already been shot. The star-studded videos are set to feature Laura Dern, Dita Von Teese, John Early, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Mike Birbiglia, Laith Ashley, the Haim sisters and her collaborator on the album Jack Antonoff.
Three hours after the release of ‘Midnights’, Taylor premiered the ‘3am version’ of the album which features seven additional tracks! Taylor first teased the news by revealing that a “special very chaotic surprise” was set to accompany the album’s release which fans believed would either be a tour or a documentary announcement.
Revealing the news on Instagram, Taylor began: “Surprise! I think of Midnights as a complete concept album, with those 13 songs forming a full picture of the intensities of that mystifying, mad hour.”
“However! There were other songs we wrote on our journey to find that magic 13. I’m calling them 3am tracks,” she went on. “Lately I’ve been loving the feeling of sharing more of our creative process with you, like we do with From The Vault tracks. So it’s 3am and I’m giving them to you now.”
