Twenty One Pilots
Blurryface (Warner Music)
Breakdown: Blurryface is the fourth album from American pop duo Twenty One Pilots. Now, I feel embarrassed to say that I have never heard of the band before this album but they have my full attention now. The record has seen singles such as ‘Fairly Local’ as well as the new single ‘Ride’. Don’t let their cover fool you, this isn’t a hard rock band.
How Many Good Tracks: 13 of the 14.
What I Liked: Wow, what a breath of fresh air this band is! Twenty One Pilots give me serious flashbacks to the time when Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy were at their prime and the fact that they manage to slay in 2015 is brilliant. I love how the band use every genre that influences them in each and every song – and do so without making the tracks sound like a big mess. Not only are many of the choruses incredibly catchy, but the verses are on point as well – especially when the duo decide to rap. Tracks like ‘Lane Boy’ incorporate hip-hop, pop, reggae, electronic and even dubstep and I don’t know of many bands that are able to pull that off. The duo created the album over a character called ‘Blurryface’ which they say “represents all the things that I as an individual, but also everyone around, is insecure about.” I worry about concept albums and I don’t think Muse pulled it off with their latest record ‘Drones’ but it’s something that worked in their favour this time around.
What I Didn’t Like: While I love that the band play around with a variety of genres, it may be a bit confusing for a listener who may like a song off the album but not necessarily the rest of the album since each song is so different from the other. To me, it show’s an insane amount of creativity but I see how this could be problematic.
