The kick-ass villian film we were hoping for.
Starring: Will Smith and Margot Robbie
Plot: A secret government agency run by Amanda Waller, recruits and assigns imprisoned supervillains to carry out near-impossible black ops missions in exchange for shorter prison sentences. The volatile task force known as the “Suicide Squad” band together against an unknown but powerful threat in order to save the world and earn clemency.
Remarks: This is one of the most anticipated films of the year and I always worry that the immense hype leads to disappointment. This film was somewhere in between for me. Firstly, the story is great. Although it took a little long to set the scene, it was necessary to introduce the villains properly as most of these villains may still be unfamiliar to viewers. I would have, however, liked more details on Killer Croc and Captain Boomerang. Initially, Viola Davis caught my attention along with lead villains The Joker, Deadshot and Harley Quinn. The Suicide Squad was perfectly cast. Margot Robbie shone as Harley Quinn and instantly became my favourite character in the franchise. She oozes sexiness and isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. Her thirst for danger will attract her to many viewers. Jared Leto’s make-up as The Joker was phenomenal, however, he hardly appears in the film. This will disappoint many as he has been used a lot in the campaign for the film. I think more screen time would have allowed Jared to shine. The story does, however, leave space for a romantic sequel with The Joker and Harley Quinn which I really hope comes to life. Despite this, the film is full of action. The Suicide Squad comes in guns blazing as they attempt to save the world from the Enchantress, however, they defeat her in the most anti-climactic way ever and it puts a huge damper on the film. In my opinion, there was a lot more that could have been done with this film. In fact, I enjoyed ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ a whole lot more than this. That being said, ‘Suicide Squad’ is a superhero film like no other. It’s different take on the genre, the cheeky banter between the characters, the incredible soundtrack and decent story is what makes it stand out and it’s bound to make it a hit with viewers.
