Review: Sound of Light SA Feat. Robin Schulz

This past weekend saw the first Sound of Light SA festival occurring in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town. The festival was headlined by German DJ Robin Schulz alongside some of the best EDM acts South Africa has to offer. I was at the Jozi event and, man, what a party it was!

Firstly, I must commend the festival on choosing Nasrec as the party venue. Parking was simple and the hall looked amazing! Even the outside food section, despite being small, just worked. Another great thing about the venue was that the sound was on point! It’s rare to go to a music event and hear such brilliant sound. It’s stuff like that that really makes a festival worthwhile.

My highlights that evening were Goodluck and Pascal & Pearce. DJ duo, Pascal & Pearce, have this great energy on stage. Their crowd interaction is fantastic and they played the music people want to hear. I saw these two girls going absolutely mental during their set. It either shows that the girls really enjoyed Pascal & Pearce or they were on some hardcore drugs during their set. Either way.

Goodluck just rocked that stage. They are honestly one of the best live acts to ever come out of South Africa in my opinion. I love how they adjusted their set into something very EDM friendly. The remixes of their smash hit singles were shit hot and the band even played some other tracks they are enjoying at the moment AND covered ‘Prayer In C’ by Robin Schulz! It was so wicked!

After Goodluck left the stage, it was time for Robin Schulz! This part of the evening was rather lukewarm for me. Sure, I went nuts when he played the smash hits ‘Waves’, ‘Prayer In C’, ‘Sun Goes Down’ etc. but his whole set was so weird for me. Not once did he interact with the crowd besides throwing some hats into the crowd. He might as well had just remixed a set and have someone else play it. It was really disappointing for me.

That being said, I look forward to Sound of Light SA having another show next year! It really was a fantastic evening.
