The hit film makes its way to the South African stage and it translates into the best theatre production of the year.
Who didn’t love the Sister Act film which saw Whoopi Goldberg, who starred as Deloris Van Cartier, being sent to a San Francisco convent under protective custody after witnessing her boyfriend murder a colleague? The film was an international success and spawned the hit musical which has finally landed on South African shores.
The local version of this production, directed by the incredible Janice Honeyman, is brilliant. While we absolutely loved the show, it is important to know that the music featured in this production isn’t the same that featured in the film. This is rather disappointing but there are new songs that you will love.
The musical was cast perfectly with Candida Mosoma playing Deloris and Kate Normington delivering a spectacular Mother Superior. The two pulled off each note effortlessly and the chemistry between the duo could not be ignored. The different nuns in the convent also added their own flavour to the production. Candida’s ‘Take Me To Heaven’ will be etched in your mind long after the curtains have closed and Kate’s ‘I Haven’t Got A Prayer’ is a production highlight.
From a hauntingly beautiful church interior to the inside of a police station and a bar, the production team knew how to set a stage. As for the costumes, we couldn’t have asked for anything better. The sound and lighting team also elevated the production to world-class status.
This show is spectacular and we are so proud of the local actors who managed to make Sister Act such as success. We’ve been to the theatre so many times this year and we can easily say that this is the best local production of 2015 so far.
Sister Act plays at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein until the 16th of August 2015. Tickets available at www.joburgtheatre.com.
