Marno Van Der Merwe
Kalm Jou Army
Breakdown: You may recognize Marno Van Der Merwe from KykNet’s hit show ‘Sterlopers’ and the film ‘Modder En Bloed’ but there is more than meets the eye to this incredibly talented actor. He is also a musician and has just dropped his debut album ‘Kalm Jou Army’ which includes the single ‘Uitverkoop’ and ‘O My Liefde’.
How Many Good Tracks: 7 of the 12.
What I Liked: Marno has what it takes to be a star. He has an incredibly strong vocal and is able to adjust it to both pop bangers and mid-tempo ballads. Marno does a lot of experimentation on the album and proves that he is a force to be reckoned with. Lyrically, the album shines. The tracks have substance and depth and Marno has done a fantastic job writing the songs on this record. This is a solid debut album and I’m excited to see how Marno’s career blossoms.
What I Didn’t Like: The Afrikaans pop scene is becoming incredibly saturated and, unfortunately, Marno doesn’t stand out from the crowd. There is nothing on the album that I’ve never heard before. I think this is why acts like Snotkop, Joshua Na Die Reën and Bobby Van Jaarsveld are doing things differently. That being said, I truly believe Marno has the potential to make it big.
