Review: DJ Snake – Encore

French electronic producer, DJ Snake, has been the DJ that has disrupted the international dance scene the most over the past 18 months. His hit single, ‘Middle’, became a radio phenomenon and his new collaboration with Justin Bieber, ‘Let Me Love You’, has become one of his biggest singles to date. Now, the DJ has dropped his debut studio album ‘Encore’.

There aren’t many moments when an artist has incredibly strong singles but fails at the rest of the record’s execution, however, this is unfortunately the case with ‘Encore’. The album is filled with predictable dance tracks that tackle a variety of electronic, pop and hip-hop elements. While the DJ manages to hit the nail on the head on a few tracks, the overall album leaves the audience confused. DJ Snake has tried his hands at too many genres and ultimately lost his identity with this album.

DJ Snake had all the tools and, judging from his hit singles, the knowledge to make this album great. He tapped artists such as Skrillex, Justin Bieber, Mr Hudson, Swizz Beatz, Jeremih and many more but the overall album lacks that punch of creativity and, unfortunately, falls flat.

That being said, there are still a few banging dance tracks on the record. Besides the singles, “Sober”, “Future Pt 2” and “Here Comes The Night” are definitely contenders for the album’s next single and have the potential to become smash hits.

DJ Snake is incredibly talented and he has shown us this on many occasions. However, I think it’s a blend of talent and lack of focus that brought this confusing album to life. DJ Snake seems to want to show off what he is made of – no matter what genre or musical style – rather than formulating a sound and objective for the album. This album had the opportunity to be a career-defining moment for the DJ, but he missed the mark entirely.
