Several months after the release of his critically-lauded fourth album, ‘Wake Up, It’s Morning’, Capetonian pop singer-songwriter Matthew Mole has teamed up with Joburg alternative pop artist, CHXRL, to rework ‘Okay’, an up tempo track off that album that has become somewhat of a fan favourite lately.
Matthew took note of CHXRL when the young singer posted an acoustic cover of one of Matthew’s tracks on Instagram explaining, “I’ve known CHXRL for about a year now and he is such a gem of a human. When I released ‘Say You’ll Be Mine’ he posted a video online where he took the song and created his own version where he layered his own production on top of the original version,” Matthew tells us. “I loved it so much and thought that ‘Okay’ would be a fun song for him to do it again, officially!”
While the album version of ‘Okay’ sees Matthew have an almost pop-punk like moment, the reworked version strips things back quite a bit. “I believe what makes a good song is if you can perform it on a single instrument and it holds up as it would if it was performed with full production,” Matthew explains. “You can dress a song in so many different ways, but the song remains the song. I love dressing my songs in different ways whether for release, to play live or just for the fun of it. I thought it would be fun to bring CHXRL in on this one because he is insanely talented and creative and will show people this song in a way that’s different to what I could have done and I think people will love it!”
