Local electronic act Goodluck has always been exceptionally vocal about issues that matter to them. As the world continues to battle the Covid-19 coronavirus, the band has raised over R300 000 to help feed poor families who have lost their source of income during this pandemic and now, they’re standing up for Mother Earth as they ask the hard questions in their new single ‘What Next’.
The song is a plea for change that challenges listeners to consider what our future will look like if we continue on the same path of disregard for the environment. Lead vocalist, Jules said, “We cannot go back to treating the world the way we did before this pandemic. We have to change the way we live and consume, or the future isn’t going to look bright for any of us. That’s the message we want ‘What Next?’ to drive home.”
Jules adds that she has been working on this track since 2017 but felt that something was holding her back. Now, the pandemic has helped her put the finishing touches on the song. “With the feelings I’ve been having in the face of this pandemic, I found the words to finish the song. It felt like it was meant to be released now”, says Jules.
The single comes at a time where widespread lockdowns have seen marked reductions in air pollution levels around the globe – demonstrating nature’s ability to rejuvenate and thrive when human interference is reduced.
The band, however, is putting their money where their mouth is and has committed to donating 50% of their profits earned from ‘What Next?’ to the World Land Trust during this time. The organisation – backed by Sir David Attenborough – works to restore and preserve threatened habitats.
