The Goliath Comedy Club’s Next Chapter

Over the past year, The Goliath Comedy Club has cemented it’s place as the ‘it’ place for comedy. With it’s prime location at Melrose Arch, a delicious restaurant in the form of Roast Cafe and owners with a passion for South African comedy, the club quickly became a massive success – selling out almost every night. Now, Now the Goliath & Goliath team, comprising of Managing Director Kate, and comedy trio, Jason, Nicholas and Donovan Goliath, plan on getting bigger and better by expanding their footprint nationally with the Goliath Comedy Club in a brand new format.

“We celebrated the Goliath Comedy Club’s one year birthday a few weeks ago. The club has passed all expectations and we are about 12 months ahead of our anticipated growth,” said Jason Goliath. Now, the team are looking towards their future. “Our primary focus has always been comedy. We want to continue to assist comedians and make comedy more accessible to the people. With our current setup, we have found that we spend more time running a restaurant and less time focusing on stand-up comedy.” It is because of this that the team decided to refocus and start planning the next step of their career.

The new format will see the comedy club moving into a new space and will follow two phases. Phase one, 19 May 2017, will see the Goliath Comedy Club move to The Venue in Melrose Arch where the comedic brand will be able to focus on hardcore comedy. The new and improved Goliath Comedy Club will be bigger and better, having the capacity to cater for up to 400 people, instead of the current 160.

Phase two will see at least two more Goliath Comedy Clubs in Gauteng. With a view to be national within the next 24 months looking at Cape Town and Durban. “We will hopefully open the first four clubs within the next 24 months. It’s all about finding a talent pool in the surrounding areas and building an audience. We want to target high traffic, metropolitan areas.” Jason adds. “Comedians and comedy lovers can look forward to “purest” comedy platforms that are designed to give comedy the platform it deserves.”

This is an exciting new step for comedy in South Africa. The Goliath & Goliath team continue to champion the industry by pushing boundaries and opening doors that weren’t there for themselves. I’m very excited for the future of this exciting brand.
